Ruff Sqwad 2012 EP Review

Ruff Sqwad - 2012 EP

Today we see the release of one of the most talked about ‘free downloads’ in the scene right now. The renowned Grime crew Ruff Sqwad, who are responsible for some of the biggest tracks to come out of this scene, drop their ’2012 EP’ featuring some tracks you would have already heard, such as the ‘RSMD Remix’, as well as some completely unheard tracks, including ‘Journey’ featuring Newham General’s D Double E.

This is first release we’ve seen from Ruff Sqwad since 06, when they dropped ‘Guns & Roses Vol.2′, with a lot changing since then, one of the most note-worthy being Tinchy gaining mainstream success. Although it’s been a long time since they’ve put out tracks as a collective, and the sound has changed somewhat, the essence of their music is still very much the same. So when you listen to one of their tracks you know your listening to a crew and not just a bunch of MCs thrown together on the song.

Ruff Sqwad

The EP is twelve tracks deep and contains features from Roachee, Lee Brasco, JME and D Double E as well as productions from Rowntree and G Tank. We even see the return of Shifty Rydos on the RSMD remix. However if you’re wondering why Fuda Guy doesn’t make an appearance, the crew actually revealed last night on Ustream that he has left, something which we had suspected for a long time.

Although this EP is all in all a very strong release, there are a couple of tracks that clearly shine through above the rest. The first one of these has to be the track ‘Journey’ which features D Double E. The track portrays the musical journey they have all been through, including the ups and the downs, and why giving up will never be an option. The next one in our list of highlights from the release, see’s the crew revisit the old school classic ‘Anna’, keeping the original instrumental and then laying down some new bars which are relevant to today. Apart from the two mentioned above, there is plenty other bangers on this EP including the Rowntree produced track ‘SOS’, ‘Dats How I Like It’ featuring JME and of course the RSMD remix.

When a crew or artist go away for a while and then come back their material can sometimes be disappointing, but that’s certainly not the case here. The Ruff Sqwad in 2012 have proved themselves to be just as relevant as they were back in the day and judging by quality of the tracks we’ve heard on this, we can certainly expect a lot from the third edition of ‘Guns & Roses’ which is meant to be dropping later this year.
